Giving Is Better Than Receiving

In Crown Heights, Germany, a Jewish man named Yankel owned a bakery.

He asked everyone he met:
Do you know why I’m still alive today?
He went on to say:
I was a child in Germany, and the Nazis were mercilessly arresting and killing Jews.

In winter, we were forced onto a train to go to Auschwitz.
Night had fallen, and it was deadly cold in that carriage. It was snowing.
We didn’t eat anything for several days, and then the German soldiers kicked us off the train and left us on the tracks.
Looking ahead there was nothing besides a vast expanse of snow. Every second a cold wind blew; it felt like a knife cutting into our flesh.
There were no blankets to keep us warm.

On that cold night, hundreds of us had no food, no water, and no shelter.
The blood in our bodies was beginning to solidify into ice.
An old man from my hometown was sitting next to me. He was deeply respected and loved by everyone. I saw him trembling from head to toe, and his situation was terrible. I wrapped my arms around him to warm him up, and I hugged him tightly to give him some heat.

I rubbed his arms, his legs, his face, and his neck vigorously. I begged him to try to stay alive. I encouraged him all night. In this way, I kept the old man warm.

I was tired, I was frozen, and my fingers were numb, but I did not stop trying to help the old man.
After a few hours, the sun rose and began to shine on the earth.

I looked around at the others, and to my horror, all that I could see were frozen bodies. All I could hear was a deadly silence, and no one else was alive.

The cold night killed everyone. They died of cold, and only two people survived ~~ the old man and me.

The old man survived because I kept him warm. And I lived because he kept me warm.

May I tell you the secret of living in this world?

When you warm someone’s heart, you stay warm.
When you support, encourage, and inspire others, you will find support, encouragement, and inspiration in your own life.

This is the secret to a happy life.

When you give love to others, you give love to yourself.

When you make others happy, you make yourself happy, and people will also take the effort to make you happy in return.

The happiest people in life are the givers, not the receivers.
