Inspired by a Ship

There is no ship that sails on the sea without incurring a scratch.

The British Lloyd’s Insurance Company once bought a ship from an auction house. This ship had its maiden voyage in 1894 and had encountered icebergs 138 times, hit reefs 116 times, caught fire 13 times, and had its masts broken by storms 207 times in the Atlantic Ocean. However, it never sank.

Based on its incredible experiences (and the considerable profits it brought its owners in terms of insurance premiums) Lloyd’s Insurance Company finally decided to buy it back from the Netherlands and donate it to Britain for the education of the public. Now this ship is moored in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, UK.

However, it was a lawyer who helped spread the ship’s fame after visiting the museum. At that time, he had just lost a lawsuit and his client had committed suicide not long ago. Although this was not his first failed defense nor the first suicide case he had encountered, he always felt a sense of guilt whenever such things happened. He didn’t know how to comfort those who had suffered misfortunes despite his best efforts.
When he saw this ship at the Greenwich Maritime Museum, he suddenly had an idea: why not suggest that these people come and visit this ship? It might cheer them up to see something that had been through everything, and yet was still standing. So, he copied down the history of the ship and hung copies of it, along with various photos of the boat, throughout his law firm. Whenever business clients came to him for defense, regardless of whether they won or lost in the end, he would suggest that they go and see this ship.

Just like ships, there are no people in this world who manage to live without encountering difficulties that may scar us. If we don’t want to sink, we must push on ahead anyway.

Warm reminder:
Although one may encounter many setbacks, the secret to success lies in being able to stand firm and persevere regardless.
