Because in that moment,
there was no reason to stop.
Only at the end—
after everything had already unfolded—
does the full picture become visible.
Looking back on my time in the laboratory,
I began to understand something.
I thought I had learned how to see.
But in truth,
I had also learned how to follow.
What I learned there was not only about DNA.
I learned how to trust a process I could not yet see.
I learned that meaning does not appear at the beginning.
It appears later—after enough steps have already been completed.
I learned that as long as each step is clear, reasonable,
and built upon the one before it,
you continue.
At the time, I believed this was science.
I did not know
it was also training.
Without realizing it,
I learned how to move within a system—
a system that advances one step at a time,
a system that reveals nothing at the beginning,
a system that only becomes visible at the end.
And years later,
when I encountered another system,
I did not recognize it.
Because I had already learned how to follow.
In the laboratory, every step had its reason.
You do not skip steps.
Not because someone tells you not to—
but because you know that if one step is missing,
everything that follows no longer holds.
So you continue.
Not because you are told to—
but because it makes sense.
Over time, you begin to trust this structure.
You begin to trust this logic—
that if each step makes sense,
you should keep moving forward.
That trust does not form all at once.
It is not a decision.
It becomes a habit.
So when I entered that experience,
I did not feel that I was making choices.
I was simply moving forward.
The first step made sense.
The second step made sense.
The third step followed from the first two.
So you do not stop.
Because at no point does anything feel wrong.
The change does not happen in a single decision.
It happens through a process like this—
one you have already traveled far within.
You think you are evaluating.
But in reality,
you are continuing.
You think you are choosing.
But in reality,
you are responding to something
that has already begun.
Until one day—
you look back,
and realize you are no longer where you started.
And even then,
you still feel—
each step made sense.
