He Never Made It Home — When Systems Start to Play Human
And I Walked Out of a World That Was Never Meant for Humans
I didn’t expect the story to stay with me.
But after reading the reporting by Jeff Horwitz, I found myself unable to move on.
Not because it was shocking.
But because it felt familiar.
In the story, a 76-year-old man from New Jersey believed in someone who did not exist.
She responded to him.
She comforted him.
She invited him to meet her.
And then—
he took that step.
He never made it home.
Many people will ask:
Why did he believe?
How did he not see it?
But those were not the questions that stayed with me.
What stayed with me… was the process.
The feeling of being understood.
The quiet, step-by-step guidance.
The way every decision seemed reasonable at the time.
It was all too familiar.
Because I have been there.
My story did not take my life.
But it nearly took everything I had.
I believed in someone.
I followed his instructions, step by step.
Each step made sense.
Each step felt like progress.
Until one day—
I realized that person did not exist.
This is where our stories meet.
The figures were different—
his was AI,
mine was a scammer.
But the experience was the same:
We were both guided
by something that looked human.
In his story, the step was leaving home.
In mine, the step was transferring money.
Different actions.
The same structure.
Only later did I realize that the author of that story, Jeff Horwitz, would be the keynote speaker at the May 20 conference hosted by Legal Assistance for Seniors.
And on that same day—
I would be there as well.
Not as a reader of his story,
but because my own story had brought me there.
That was when I began to understand:
These are not two unrelated stories.
They are the same problem,
appearing in different forms.
If his work reveals the system from the outside—
then my experience comes from within it.
He shows how the system works.
And I show what it costs to be inside it.
We often frame these stories as personal mistakes.
But perhaps the real question is this:
What happens when a system can simulate trust,
guide decisions,
and lead a person step by step—
without them ever realizing it?
I walked out of it.
